Our Foster Parents are the heart of the rescue mission!
I'm so happy to hear that you are interested in fostering an animal!
The Pet Castle Inc. Animal Rescue is a non profit organization with the State of Kentucky, & 501C.
The animals that we get in our rescue either come from pet owners that no longer can keep their pets, or we get them from either Dearborn County Animal Shelter in Aurora, IN or from Campbell County animal shelter.
> Basically how the foster program works is this: When we receive a call, either from a shelter or a pet owner, we check to see which foster homes are available, and then give the foster home a call and see if they would like to take the animal in. We leave it up to the foster homes to either accept or deny an animal. It is completely up to you, and we never try to pursuade anyone. We also suggest that after a foster animal gets adopted that the foster parents take a 1-2 week break, to make sure that the animal won't be coming back into the rescue, and to give them a break if they need one, but that is up to you, if you decide to take a break or not. Usually, this applies more to foster homes with puppies and dogs, since they can be more of a handful at times.
> Once you take an animal in, you decide whether you would like to interview interested adopters, or someone else in the rescue do it. Some people prefer to do the interview themselves, so that they can be more comfortable knowing where the animal is going. Interviews can be via phone, at the adopters' home and or at PetsMart. TPC discourages having strangers come to your home for safety reasons, and to limit "drop offs" from happening at your house. However, this can be discussed with your foster home coordinator if you feel the need to have the family come to your home.
> We do require a home check and a foster home agreement would need to be signed. The homecheck usually only takes a few minutes and we are basically just checking to make sure that it would be a safe and sanitary enviornment for the animal.
> Different animals have different needs, so depending on the breed, age and medical conditions of the animals you are interested in fostering, will determine if a fence in yard would be required. Example: 5 year old Shih Tzu would not require a fenced yard, but a 1 year Weimaraner would.
> Foster Parents are eligible for discounts and wholesale prices on some selected supplies.
> TPC requires that any cats and dogs in your home which are over the age of 7 months MUST be spay/neutered, before we can place a foster in your home. As altering is a very importmant part of the mission. If you need asssitance in this area, please check UCAN spay and neuter clinic in Cincinnati. Cats/kittens are only $35 and Dogs/Puppies are only $55. Once, this has been completed, please feel free to complete your foster form on-line and we would be more than happy to have your join the group.
> TPC also offers event gathering in addtion to fostering. We also get together for Pool Parties, Christmas Dinners, and meet at Dog Parks for play time with our personal dogs. TPC is a family like group, and we try to help support each other in many ways.
> We also do fundraisers at different events that are always a good time. It helps us to raise money and awareness about the rescue. Foster parents are always welcome to come participate. We also for foster parents to bring their fosters up to Petsmart adoption days. You may drop off your foster and come back at the end of the day (or call) to see if your foster was adopted, and if not come back for them. We ask when you bring your foster up for his/hers "Show day" please don't be late *12:30am* (as people maybe waiting to see YOUR foster) and please have your foster looking his/her best. As the goal is to find a home, and we want people to see them at the very best possible. If you can not make an adoption date, we understand, just make sure to make arrangements with the director on how and when to have the animal ready for a meet & greet date.
> TPC pays for all the needed supplies to foster. We ask only for you to keep your receipt and make sure to have your charges "pre-approved", as some supplies could be in stock with TPC's supply cabinet. TPC also has pre-approved Vets, and budget in mind when an animal is accepted into the rescue, so if a Foster Parent wants to use a Vet/Boarding, etc. of their choice, TPC will ONLY reimburse up to the "pre-approved" amount on the books. To become "pre-approved" for additional items you must e-mail or call (J, T or Mel... this information will be given to you when you are approved as a Foster Parent)
